Reading FC News: Club announce signing ex-Manchester City winger on short-term deal
Reading FC have announced the free agent signing of Brandon Barker with the left winger joining on a short-term deal until the end of the season.
Royals boss Veljko Paunovic has recently signaled his desire to bring in a free agent or two after the conclusion of the January transfer window and with defensive reinforcements believed to be the priority, the club confirmed the deal for the striker.
Barker started his career at Manchester City’s academy but only made one appearance for the first team while on loan at Rotherham, NAC Breda, Hibernian and Preston.
In 2019, the 25-year-old joined Rangers, playing 16 times for the Scottish side in the three seasons that followed. Barker spent the 2020/21 campaign in League One with Oxford United but has been without a club since late January when he left Rangers by mutual consent.

After impressing on trial, Barker will wear number 33 for Reading and manager Paunovic has expressed his delight at closing the deal.
“I am very happy to welcome Brandon to Reading on a three-month contract which is the right opportunity for both the player and the club,” said the Serb. “During his training with us at Bearwood Park he showed us his ability, his hunger and the positive attitude he can bring to this team for the last three months of the season and I look forward to integrating him quickly into our team.”
Meanwhile, general manager Dayong Pang echoed Paunovic’s sentiments saying: “Brandon is a player we have been watching closely for several weeks now and we are very happy that he has agreed to join the club. He will add further competition for first-team places and will hopefully play a key role in the all-important final third of our season.
