Newcastle 2022 January transfer window: player signings, loans and sales

Newcastle United have already taken their first step into the January transfer window and it’s a clear statement of intent that the Magpies will be active to avoid relegation, sitting in 19th place with just one win and 11 points overall.

The Eddie Howe-led club have one of the worst defenses in the league, with 42 goals conceded in just 19 appearances and a worst total of 80 allowed goals in calendar year 2021. But they have helped close those gaps. adding England international Kieran Trippier in a $ 16.2million transfer from Atletico Madrid. Trippier can play either full-back and will bring quality, tenacity and leadership to the club.

But Newcastle won’t just be looking at the defensive side of the ball. They have only scored 19 goals themselves, which is worse than every other team except the other two teams in the relegation zone at the start of 2022. The offensive assist will therefore surely arrive beforehand. the end of January.

The Magpies are owned by a new owner, recently acquired by the Saudi Arabia Public Investment Fund, chaired by the Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia, Mohamed bin Salman. While there was a backlash in the midst of the takeover by what essentially amounts to a foreign government, the takeover has taken place and there should be significant funds available for reinforcements this winter.

Newcastle transfer rumors and news

Here is the latest news on the Newcastle United transfer front based on reports in Europe:

Will Newcastle sign a new striker?

To add to Newcastle’s already large list of woes, top scorer Callum Wilson was injured in the final of the festive game, and suddenly the already slim attack looks even more paltry. Allan Saint-Maximin also suffered minor injuries, the target of opponents who often hack the talented winger.

This prompted the Magpies to seek out attack reinforcements, and they are aiming high. One name that has popped up is that of the youngster from Real Madrid Luka jovic, which would have interested the Magpies last summer. Nothing major has arisen to suggest a deal is imminent, but Jovic’s name is thrown Newcastle Blogs as a reasonable possibility.

According to Brazilian publication Globo, Flamengo expects to receive offers for the striker Gabigol, and apparently already received a “paltry” offer from West Ham that was not even worthy of a response. The report names Newcastle as one of the clubs Flamengo expects to hear from, although the club are hopeful the Magpies have a better offer than the $ 7million loan with option to buy reportedly received from the Hammers.

Newcastle was linked to Moussa Dembele (below) from Lyon in December, and the Daily mail claims it continues to be an option. After breaking through with Fulham, Dembele spent time with Celtic and Lyon before spending the second half of last season on loan at Atletico Madrid. The Spanish side has decided not to activate the call option, and with its contract expiring in the summer of 2023, Lyon could look to sell this winter.

The Magipes definitely need defenders

While Trippier will be a welcome addition, the Magpies have shipped enough goals this season to indicate that one player won’t be enough to turn things around completely. Jamal Lascelles has lost form this season and his partnership with Fabian Schar has fallen apart.

Most vigorous of rumors centered around loan deal for Barcelona defender Samuel umtiti, that the Spanish club is trying to move, motivated by a desire to give up his contract and his salary. However, the player has reportedly rejected five separate potential transfer deals, according to daily mail and several reports. Umtiti was once a key part of Barcelona’s defense, but he has disappeared from sight, making only one La Liga appearance this season, and his contract expires in the summer of 2023. Other interested clubs are said to be the squad Turkish Fenerbahce and an unnamed French club. .

Newcastle could have the chance to sign the PSG defender Abdou Diallo, according to a report by journalist Liam Kennedy. The deal would be tricky as Diallo is on duty with Senegal during the Africa Cup of Nations, and if the country progresses deep into the tournament, it could disrupt negotiations until the transfer window deadline. The 25-year-old signed for PSG in the summer of 2019 from Borussia Dortmund but failed to find a meaningful starting spot.

Sven botman de Lille would have been interested in a move to Newcastle, and the young Dutch international would also be an asset for the future, but according to Luke Edwards of the Telegraph, Lille is not open to a possible sale with the player under contract until the summer of 2025. The Magpies would also have wanted to snatch him James tarkowski other Burnley relegation fighters, but Edwards also reported this is a remote possibility given Burnley’s struggles.

Newcastle are rumored to have made an offer for Everton as well. Lucas Digne (below) according to Sky Sports, and although a declared bid of $ 30 million and more Sean longstaff could be alluring, convincing the player to join teams like Chelsea could come and call will be a whole other task.

Among all the possibilities of incoming defenders, one player who could leave the club is the aforementioned Fabien Schar. The 30-year-old Switzerland international has made 83 appearances for Newcastle since arriving in 2018 from Spain club Deportivo La Coruna, but according to journalist Nicolo Schira, Schar hopes to find a future away from Tyneside this January, with his contract expiring this summer.

Other potential reinforcements from Newcastle United

Newcastle have been linked with countless other players this transfer window, although few of them make much sense.

One name that raises eyebrows is Manchester United Donny van de Beek, and like Luke Edwards Reports, there is reason to believe that this could happen.

Despite much outcry from fans and reporters scratching their heads, Van de Beek has had little luck at Old Trafford despite a plethora of team moves, tactical adjustments and player changes since signing for summer 2020.

With Newcastle looking for players to fill all over the field, he could be a low-risk option if acquired on loan, and Manchester United could be convinced to let Van de Beek go given the bloated squad including Ralf Rangnick disposes. It would be hard to imagine United ditching Van de Beek entirely with a permanent sale, but a loan could mean something to everyone involved.
