Marc McNulty breaks silence on Reading FC’s summer exile as he nears end of Royals’ nightmare

Reading striker Marc McNulty has lifted the veil on his exile from the first team this summer.

The 28-year-old, who has now joined Dundee United on a one-season loan deal, had to train with the Royals’ youth teams during the preseason and was not picked up taken into account for the selection in the first team.

The former Coventry City player endured three scorching years on the Reading books, having arrived from the Sky Blues in 2018 amid a lot of fanfare.

Due to the transfer embargo and the slimness of the squad currently available to Veljko Paunovic, many believed McNulty would at least have a chance to prove himself by the Serbian to bolster the numbers.

However, the striker was denied the opportunity and was exiled from the first team.

“It was tough because some days I was training with 15 and 16 year old kids,” McNulty said, as evidenced over the past few months in an interview with The mail.

“The first team had a small team and all of their U23s were with the first team and I was training with young people 18 and even younger.

“Sometimes that’s what happens in football. I knew I would get out of it eventually and just tried to keep my head down.

“I now find myself catching up here [at Dundee United], that’s why I can’t wait to be back. “

McNulty’s loan to the Tangerines is his second stint at the club after spending last year on loan.

In total, he has now had five different loans away from Reading over the past three years.

The striker’s only appearances in a Royals came right after signing for the club, when Paul Clement was manager.

He’s only scored one goal in 17 appearances, with just four of those outings as league starts.

The Scotsman will leave Reading for good next summer, with his contract ending at the end of June 2022.
