Liverpool can use Marko Grujic to land Matheus Cunha

Liverpool might have a way to secure a deal for Matheus Cunha this summer. It comes after the interest in Marko Grujic.

It looks like Liverpool have to sell players to buy new ones. This is according to the Athletic who claim the Reds spent most of their budget on Ibrahima Konate.

That makes things a little difficult, of course. Liverpool could really use a midfielder to replace Gini Wijnaldum as the attack needs fresh blood.

One player Liverpool could sell, of course, is Marko Grujic. The Serbian spent last season with FC Porto – the latest in a long line of loans.

Before that it was two successful years with Hertha BSC. Successful enough, in fact, that the club definitely want it.

Berliner Kurier says Hertha will be moving this summer. They believe he could sign up for around £ 12million, which suits all parties.

But we think Liverpool could use this interest to work on their side.

Matheus Cunha in Liverpool?

We think Liverpool should watch Matheus Cunha, a player who may be on the verge of exploding into fantastic talent. He’s currently at Hertha, helping them avoid relegation last season.

And it could be on the market as is. Kicker claims Hertha would sell for around £ 30million, with director Fredi Bobic admitting the player could leave.

“If he will play the future with us, we will have to see,” he said, by objective. “I can’t say at the moment if he’s happy to want to stay here.”

Cunha has had a very decent season for a struggling team. He has scored seven goals in the Bundesliga and added four assists.

This latter figure is particularly noteworthy as Cunha was not a very creative player before – he only had one the previous campaign.

But the Brazilian has averaged 1.8 chances per game during the season. That’s up from 0.6 per game in 2019/20.

Cunha improves then and he is only 22 years old. He is a player who, in the right environment, could become very special. Liverpool can offer him that environment, with a knack for taking players a level or two under Jurgen Klopp.

And Grujic could help get Hertha to the table for a decent price. After all, this article by Berliner Kurier mentions that FC Porto also want the Serbian.

Guaranteeing Grujic to Hertha could then reduce Cunha’s price by a few million. And since Liverpool don’t have too much to spend, it could turn out to be a fantastic deal.
